What is Thai massage?

Thai massage takes place on a padded mat on the floor, and the client remains fully clothed throughout. The client may be seated, lying on their front, on their back or on their side. They receive a combination of acupressure, mobilization and stretching. The practitioner uses their hands, elbows, knees and feet to guide the client’s body through a series of yoga-style positions, including some deep stretches.

Many styles of Thai massage exist. Hibiscus Massage combines traditional Thai yoga massage (Nuad Boran) with modern “osteo-Thai” techniques and a little Korean relaxation.

The pressure can range from gentle to firm and always respects the client’s limits. The stretches can be deep, but the body is never forced beyond its comfortable range of movement. The practitioner works with the body rather than forcing it, allowing the stretches and mobilizations to be performed progressively and with care. The client simply breathes and relaxes while the practitioner does the work.

Loose, comfortable clothing that allows plenty of movement is essential. Long, comfortable pants and a long-sleeved T-shirt are ideal.

Who is this massage for?

Thai massage can be a good choice for people who enjoy being moved into different positions to explore their comfortable range of movement. It really is a massage in three dimensions.

It can be particularly appealing to people who spend a lot of time sitting, driving or doing physical work, as well as those who enjoy sport and want more movement incorporated into their massage.

Thai massage techniques can be adapted to different body types, ages and levels of mobility.
